This is the Boulder Bank. A natural phenomenon, it is about 14 kilometres from end to end and is made from boulders from a now defunct mountain that have been moved to this site by tide action.

There are 4 similar banks throughout the world.

Bank photographs were taken from the top of the lighthouse.

The Lighthouse on the Boulder bank was erected in 1860. Imported from England and made of steel, it was bolted together and is maintained by Private Enterprise.

No longer in use because of the lights of the city, it is kept in working order ready for an emergency.

Looking South West along the Boulder Bank, you may see the cut through it which allows easy access to Port Nelson.

Typical surface and structure of the bank. These boulders may be of tiny to large diameter.
